Aspenshade was born as part of a 'miracle' litter to two older warriors shortly before their retirement. Him and his twin sister, Willowflight. The two were inseparable and opposites in every way. Aspenpaw was quiet and observant, Willowpaw was loud and excited, ready to jump into a challenge with all four feet. A few months into their apprenticeship, Willowpaw was approached and offered the opportunity to become the medicine cat apprentice, she was ecstatic, it had always been her dream to help other cats, unlike her brother, she wasn't much of a fighter.
They were sad to be separated, but Aspenpaw supported his sister wholeheartedly in this endeavor, it had been her dream since they were kits, and he was determined to help her see it through.
She'd only had her full name for a week when spring floods came. They'd gone down to the river together to check on the floodwaters, grab a few herbs that would soon be under the waterline for the future. Willowflight spotted a pair of Riverclan apprentices playing on the opposite bank, daring each-other to stick a paw into the roaring water, seeing who could go in the deepest.
Aspenshade had scoffed at their antics, Willowflight found it endearing.
And then one of them went too far in.
Willowflight was compassionate and empathetic, and ready to jump into anything with all four feet, so before he could blink she was in the river, letting herself be pulled along to reach the apprentice. she grabbed them and hauled towards the riverbank, but the river was swift with floodwater, and Willowflight barely knew how to swim. Aspenshade ran frantically alongside the riverbank, trying to find some way to help, eyes wide as he realized his twin was starting to sink as her legs tired and she couldn't fight the current. He pushed back his fear and reservations and jumped in after her.
He barely remembers what happened next outside of dreams that wake him up in terror even years later, but he awoke on Riverclan shore with the apprentice, Riverclan patrol having saved the two of them, his sister nowhere to be seen.
